Weather Guidelines
Lightning Safety
Storms are common, and safety comes first.
AYSO Policy:
If lightning is seen or thunder is heard, all games must stop immediately, and fields must be cleared for at least 30 minutes.
Each time lightning is seen or thunder is heard, the 30-minute timer restarts.
Only referees can cancel a game in progress.
The Regional Board is the only authority that can cancel games for the entire day.
Cold Weather Safety
New Mexico’s weather can be unpredictable, but preparation is key. Follow these tips to prevent cold-related injuries:
Dressing for the Cold
Layer clothing to adapt to changing temperatures.
Layers can be added or removed as needed.
Players can wear extra clothing like gloves, sweatshirts, sweatpants, hats, or headbands.
Avoid sweating before going outside, as it can lead to rapid cooling.
Stay Dry
Wet clothing increases the risk of cold-related injuries.
Replace wet clothing with dry items, especially if standing still for extended periods.
Keep extra hats, gloves, and socks handy.
Stay Hydrated
Cold weather can mask signs of dehydration.
Drink warm or hot water to prevent freezing during extended outdoor activity.
Take Action
If a player shows signs of cold-related illness, move them to a warm location immediately.
Identify nearby warming locations before games or practices.
Provide blankets or warm items for players on the bench and allow extra substitutions or warming breaks.
Wind Chill
Even mild temperatures can lead to frostbite with prolonged exposure. Use the National Weather Service Wind Chill Chart as a guide to determine safe playing conditions.
